Introduction to
MARPA
• Choppysea stateconditionsexistyieldingpoorstability;ownship’s
headingdataisveryunstable.
• Inadequateheadingdata
Symptomsof suchconditionsare that acquisitionisdifficult andthe
MARPA vectorsareunstable;thesymbolwandersaway from the target,
locksonto anothertargetor changestoa losttargetsymbol.Ifanyofthese
conditionsarepresent,acquisitionandtrackingmayneedtobere-initiated
or,insomecasesbe impossibletomaintain.Improvingthequality of the
headingdatawillreducetheeffect of the otherconditions.
Risk Assessment
Eachtargetismonitoredtosee ifitwill bewithinacertaindistancefromyour
ownvessel withina certaintime.If so, thetarget is designatedas dangerous
andyou are warnedwithan audiblealarmin additiontoa warning onthe
screen.Thetargetsymbolchangesandflashestoindicatethatitisadangerous
target. Pressingany key silencesthe alarm andremovesthe warning,but the
target symbol remains dangerous.
Boththedistance(Own VesselSafeZone)andthetime (Time to Safe Zone)
areselectableas describedin Section 7.5.
Ifa target is lost,either becausetheMARPA softwarehaslostcontactwith it,
orbecauseit has movedoutofrange,you are warned,againwith an audible
alarmandanon-screenwarning.Pressinganykeysilencesthealarm,removes
thewarningandremovesthelost targetsymbolfromthescreen.
Target Data
AllMARPA targetsare storedin a MARPA databaselist, whichshows
bearing,range,course and speedof each trackedtarget.
Foranyonetarget a pop-updatabox can be placedonthescreen,this shows
bearing,range,course, speed,CPA(Closest PointofApproach)andTCPA
(TimetoClosest Point ofApproach).Thetarget forwhichdata isdisplayedis
indicated bya circlearound its symbol.
Eachtargetisdisplayedasasymboltoindicateitsstatus:
Target isbeing acquired
Target is safe
Targetisdangerous.
Target is Lost
The dangerous and lost symbols are shown flashing.
