McMURDO SMARTFIND E5

406MHz EPIRB

The Smartfind E5 is a new ultra-compact 406MHz EPIRB.

Once removed from it's Carrysafe mounting bracket, the unit

can be activated either manually or automatically by immersion

in water. A hydrostatic release casing is also available.

Smartfind EPIRBs are programmed with a unique serial number

which must be registered with the national authorities. Where

permitted by these authorities, beacons can be re-programmed

with the vessel's MMSI or Radio Call Sign.

406MHz GPS PLB

Handheld PLB with integral GPS featuring the same

advanced technology found in the award winning

Precision EPIRB. Designed using miniature

components to fit into an erogonomically styled

compact casing, it employs a simple 3 stage manual

operation and features user replaceable battery

packs. It is ideal for alerting the rescue services of an

emergency during maritime, light aircraft and

outdoor activities (where licensing

allows).

internal GPS. Alert signal to rescue services within

90 mins, typical positional accuracy to within 3nm

A 9GHz X-Band Radar transceiver

that has been designed for

assisting air/sea ship or survival

craft rescue operations in

What is an EPIRB?

An Emergency Position Indicating

Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is used to alert the s

Search And Rescue services in the event of an

emergency. It transmits a coded message on

the 406MHz distress frequency, which is

detected by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellites.

Emergency alerts are relayed to the closest

Local User Terminal, which then forwards the

information to the Mission Control Centre where

the message is decoded. The distress details

and vessel details (taken from the registration

details) are then passed to the appropriate

Rescue Coordination Centre who co-ordinate

the relevant Search And Rescue authorities.

What’s the difference between an EPIRB

and a PLB?

Once the Search And Rescue service are in the

area, they need to pinpoint your position directly.

McMurdo’s Rescue and Precision EPIRBs contain

a 121.5MHz location transmitter for this purpose.

That’s fine if you’re with the EPIRB, but if you’re

in the water or have become separated from the

vessel, you’ll still want the rescue services to find

you quickly and easily. A Personal Locator

Beacon (PLB) transmits on the same 121.5MHz

frequency, but is designed to be carried on your

person - many quality foul weather jackets have

a pocket on the sleeve for this purpose.

And what’s a SART?

Generally deployed in the liferaft on a long pole,

a Search And Rescue Transponder (SART)

performs a similar function to a PLB, the differ-

ence being that a SART sends out a 9GHz signal

which is detected by a ship’s radar, appearing as

a dotted line pointing to your position.

The large and easy to read backlit LCD display

concentrates Navtex and NMEA data from your GPS
